What does it mean in terms of film when people mention the ' MTV Generation' ?

I am currently reviewing a German/English movie titled 'Run Lola Run' and have to identify why the film is recognisable as a storyline from a period when video games and MTV have become an important part of youth culture. I don't however have a clue what in terms of film production the 'MTV generation' refers to. Any help? Thanks :)
